Pregnancy can be like a roller coaster ride, which is why it is best to prepare yourself beforehand. First, If you are trying to have a baby or even thinking about one, it is the perfect time to get ready for the pregnancy period. It does not matter if you are having your first or fourth child, your body needs to prepare itself for the upcoming drastic change – and that cannot happen unless you want it to.
Second, to help you out, we have rounded up a list of 3 things that you should ideally do before you get pregnant.
Have the Parenting Talk
Most experts believe that before you get pregnant, it is important to have a chat with your partner about all the significant parenting issues. This may include – but are not limited to – religious traditions, the role of both parents in childcare, working vs. staying at home, and more.
However, do not stress about minor things too much and remember to keep an open mind about certain things that are way down the road, such as private vs. public schools, as you might change your mind as you go along (same goes for your partner).
Visit Your Doctor
Now this one is a given, yet many people ignore it and regret it later on. It is a good idea to visit your doctor once before you actively try to get pregnant, as he/she can help identify any serious health issues that might cause a problem for you during pregnancy.
If you or your partner have a history of genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, then you might have to visit a genetic counselor or get some preconception screening tests done.
Cut Back on Smoking and Partying
Every woman knows that smoking, drinking alcohol, and using certain drugs during pregnancy is a complete no-no as it can lead to some serious problems, including premature births and birth defects.
If you indulge in either or both, you need to start scaling back before you get pregnant. You may also want to discuss rehab plans with your doctor to quit these habits if you are unable to do so on your own.
