Genital Piercing for Men and Women

Genital Piercing; Body mod enthusiasts love to explore areas of the body that can be pierced, and the genital area is no exception. As impressive as these perforations can look (and feel!), there is a dark side to genital piercings. It’s important to note the adverse side effects and the possible damage that can occur as a result of decorating your genitals.

Types of Genital Piercings

Any gender can engage in genital piercings. It is possible in women to have the clitoral hood pierced and, even rarely, the actual clitoris (although that can be quite dangerous). In addition, both the labia majora and the labia minora can be pierced.

Piercing the lips of the vulva is similar to penetrating the delicate tissue of the earlobes.

In men, the options are much greater. In total, there are up to 13 different types of piercings for the male genitalia. Broadly speaking, these areas would include the tip of the penis, the shaft, the scrotum, and the perineum.

Why Do People Pierce Their Genitals?

For many, genital piercings can provide more stimulation to the area, creating increased sensitivity to sexual pleasure. Also, for those who enjoy the look of piercings, these can be esthetically pleasing.

Negative Consequences of Genital Piercings

This type of body modification is not without risk and can sometimes cause permanent injuries. The tissue around the genitals is susceptible and delicate. Also, not everyone’s body will take well to a piercing.

First, there is a concern of transmitting Hepatitis B or C, a virus that can damage the liver. Also, if a piercing is not cared for properly, both men and women could develop an infection. These infections can lead to severe issues such as infertility and can even be fatal if not addressed immediately.

In women, a genital piercing can cause complications during pregnancy. There is also a risk of causing nerve damage to the clitoris.

Men with piercings could accidentally harm their partner during sex and are also at risk of STIs and urinary tract infections. In addition, men could notice a reduction in sensation to their penis as the jewelry rubs away at the foreskin. Also, it is possible to be more suspectable to physical afflictions such as tearing or contagions.

Proper Care is Essential

It goes without saying that cleaning your piercing is important, especially with the genital area. One must practice excellent, daily hygiene in order to maintain the health of their skin and nerves. Because moisture and excretions can build up in the genital region, extra caution should be taken.

Also, when researching your piercer, it’s vital to ensure that they are appropriately certified and take measures to sterilize their equipment.

Piercings may look beautiful and offer a sign of individual expression, but they do come with a warning label. Be aware of the risks before choosing to have your genitals pierced.
